When asked to write a brief introduction to this exhibition, I was delighted to recall my long friendship with Parviz Shapour. A graduate of Tehran University, Parviz (1923-2000) was employed in a government ministry until his retirement. Caricaturist, writer, artist, humorist, philosopher, he was an esteemed friend and mentor of many artists, among them Ardeshir Mohassess, Bijan Assadipour, Ahmad Shamlu, and Parviz's wife. Furlough Farrokhzad, whose controversial early poetry he both encouraged and saw through to publication. Their son Kamyar lives in Tehran. Parviz "Khan" would have had so much fun here today, his great white beard and mustache embracing his smile, his deep twinkling eyes taking in the room, the art, and the people. But of course, he is here, manifesting over the divide of time, culture and form, whispering in our ears, offering his vision of valuing life in every moment, celebrating the whimsy and voice of the most everyday thing; a safety pin, a spider, a clothes hanger, a goldfish. And the incomparable cats, mice, and birds along with satirical self-portraits and caricatures of friends including Ardeshir. Parviz measured his days with a dedication to his art, stayed the course of long years with courage and love and enriched our lives.
