Today(16 of Octubre), in 1859: Captain John Brown, militant abolitionist, lead an armed raid by 21 men on the national armory at Harpers Ferry. Brown aimed to arm slaves across the U.S for guerrilla war, to wrest their freedom from the hands of slave owners by any means necessary, and to extend the Underground Railroad by 500 miles into the Deep South.
