The Turkish state is amassing troops along the Syrian border as it prepares to invade and potentially commit ethnic cleansing and destroy Rojava’s extraordinary but fragile democracy, the only democratically-run part of Syria based on secular, feminist, and ecological principles. Its values oppose both fundamentalism and dictatorship and are a threat to Turkey’s authoritarian president Erdoğan.

A year ago, Turkey crossed the border into Syria to invade and occupy Afrin, driving out hundreds of thousands of Kurdish citizens, killing, looting and confiscating property, taking hostages, and repopulating the area in what amounts to ethnic cleansing.

What Erdoğan refers to as the east of the Euphrates is a Kurdish region in Syria, Rojava. The Turkish state has attacked Kurds within its own borders and beyond, whenever the opportunity arises.

Kurdish officials met with a French presidential adviser Friday, and one asked France to play a larger role in Syria following the American withdrawal.
