To the People of Mexico:

To the Peoples and Goverments of the World:

Brothers and Sisters:

Compañeros and compañeras:

This past December 21, 2012, in the pre-dawn hours, tens of thousands of indigenous Zapatistas mobilized and we took over, peacefully and in silence, 5 municipal seats in the Mexican southeastern state of Chiapas.

In the cities of Palenque, Altamirano, Las Margaritas, Ocosingo, and San Cristobal de las Casas, we watched you and we watched ourselves in silence.
This is not a message of resignation.

It is not one of war, death, or destruction.

Our message is one of struggle and resistance.

After the media-driven coup d'état that exalted a poorly concealed and even more poorly disguised ignorance to the federal executive branch, we made ourselves present so that you would know that if they never left, neither did we.

Six years ago, a segment of the political and intellectual class went out in search of someone to blame for its loss. At that time we were in cities and communities, struggling for justice for an Atenco that was not fashionable at that time.

On that yesterday first they defamed us, and then they wanted to shut us up. Too incapable and dishonest to see that within themselves they had and have the seeds of their own destruction, they tried to make us disappear with lies and complicit silence.

Six years later, two things remain clear:

They don't need us to fail.

We don't need them to survive.

We never left, even though media from all over the spectrum have dedicated themselves to making you believe that, and we are reemerging as the indigenous Zapatistas that we are and will be.

In these past years we've strengthened ourselves and we have significantly improved our living conditions. Our standard of living is superior to that of the indigenous communities that are linked to the governments in power, that receive charity and squander it all on alcohol and useless things.
Our homes improve without hurting nature by imposing roads upon it that are foreign to it. In our villages, the land that was previously used to fatten estate owners' cattle is now used to grow the corn, beans, and vegetables that brighten our tables.
Our work has the double satisfaction of providing us with what we need to live honorably and to contribute to the collective growth of our communities.
Our boys and girls go to a school that teaches them their own history, that of their fatherland and of the world, as well as the sciences and techniques they need to grow without no longer being indigenous.
The indigenous Zapatista women are not sold as merchandise. The indigenous PRI members go to our hospitals, clinics, and laboratories because in those provided by the government there are no medicines, nor equipment, nor doctors, nor qualified personnell.

Our culture florishes not insolation, but rather enriched by contact with the cultures of other peoples of Mexico and the world.

We govern and we govern ourselves, always seeking agreement before confrontation.

All of this has been achieved not only without the government, the political class, and the media that accompanies them, but also while resisting their attacks of all kinds.

We have demonstrated, yet again, that we are who we are. With our silence, we were present.

Now, with our word we announce that:

First: we reaffirm and consolidate our membership in the National Indigenous Congress [CNI], a space for meeting with the original peoples of our country.

Second: we will resume contact with our compañeros and compañeras who are Adherents to the Sixth declaration of the Lacandon Jungle in Mexico and around the world.

Third: we will try to construct the necessary bridges towards the social movements that have arisen and will arise, not to lead them or take their place, but rather to learn from them, from their history, from their journeys and fates.

For this we have achieved the support of individuals and groups in different parts of the world who comprise the support teams for the EZLN's Sixth and International commissions, so that they will become communication links between the Zapatista Support Bases and the individuals, groups, and collectives that are Adherents to the Sixth Declaration in Mexico and around the world who still maintain their conviction and dedication to the construction of a leftist non-institutional alternative.

Fourth: our critical distance from the Mexican political class will continue; they have done nothing but prosper at the cost of the necessities and the hopes of humble and simple people.

Fifth: regarding the federal, state, and municipal bad governments--executive, legislative, and judicial--, and the media that accompanies them, we say to them the following:

The bad governments from all over the political spectrum, without exception, have done everything they can to destroy us, buy us, and make us give in. The PRI, PAN, PRD, PVEM, PT, CC, and the future RN party have attacked us militarily, politically, socially, and ideologically.

The corporate media tried to make us disappear, first with servile and opportunistic slander, later with cunning and complicit silence. Those whom they served and whose moneys breastfeed them are no longer around. And those who have taken their place won't last longer than their predecessors.

As was evident on December 21, 2012,
they've all failed.
It remains to be seen if the federal, executive, legislative, and judicial government decides to once again resort to the counterinsurgency policy that has only achieved a rickety farse clumsily based on media management, or if it recognizes and fulfills its duty and raises indigenous rights and culture to constitutional ranking as established by the so-called "San Andres Accords," signed by the federal government in 1996, which was ruled by the same party that now controls the executive branch.

t remains to be seen if the state government will decide if it continues its dishonest and despicable strategy of its predecesor which, in addition to being corrupt and deceitful, used the Chiapan people's money for his own enrichment and that of his accomplices and set about openly buying voices and pens in the media, while he heaped misery upon the Chiapan people, at the same time that he was using police and paramilitaries to try to stop the organizational advance of the Zapatista villages; or if it will instead, with truth and justice, accept our existence and the idea that a new form of social life is blossoming in Zapatista territory, Chiapas, Mexico. Blossoming that draws the attention of honest people all over the planet.

It remains to be seen if the municipal governments decide to keep swallowing the millstones that the anti-Zapatista or supposedly "Zapatista" organizations use to extort them to attack our communities, or if they instead use that money to improve the living conditions of their constituents.

It remains to be seen if the people of Mexico who organize themselves in electoral struggle and resist decide to continue viewing us as the enemies or rivals upon whom they can unload their frustration about the frauds and attacks that, in the end, all of us suffer, and if in their struggle for power they continue to ally themselves with our persecutors; or if they finally see in us another way of doing politics.

Sixth: in the coming days the EZLN, through its Sixth and International commissions, will announce a series of initiatives of a civil and peaceful nature, to continue walking together with the other original peoples of Mexico and the whole continent, along with those in Mexico and around the whole world who resist and struggle down and to the left.

Brothers and sisters:
Compañeros and compañeras:

Before, we had the good fortune of honest and noble attention from various media outlets. We thanked them for it then. But that was completely erased with their later attitude.

Those who bet that we only existed in the media and that with the siege of lies and silence we would disappear were wrong.

When there weren't cameras, microphones, pens, ears, and looks, we existed.

When they defamed us, we existed.

When they silenced us, we existed.

And here we are, existing.

Our pace, as has been demonstrated, does not depend upon our impact in the media, but rather upon the world's and its parts' understanding, upon the indigenous wisdom that dictates our steps, upon the unflinching courage that comes from below and to the left.

From now on, our word will begin to be selective in its recipient and, with the exception of a few occassions, will only be understood by those who have walked and walk with us without giving in to the media and current trends.

Here, with not a few errors and a lot of difficulties, another way of doing politics is already a reality.
Few, very few, will have the priviledge of knowing it and learning from it directly.

Nineteen years ago we surprised them by taking over their cities with fire and blood. Now we've done it again, without weapons, without death, without destruction.

That is how we differentiate ourselves from those who, during their administrations, delivered and deliver death to their constituents.

We are the same from 500 years ago, from 44 years ago, from 30 years ago, from 20 years ago, from just a few days ago.

We are the Zapatistas, the smallest, the ones who live, struggle, and die in the last corner of the fatherland, those who don't give up, those who don't sell out, those who don't give in.

Brothers and sisters:
compañeros and compañeras:

We are the Zapatistas, and we send you a hug.

Democracy!

Freedom!

Justice!

Psychanalyse

(1) Psychoanalyse

برای ارائه تعریف کاملتری از آن باید دانست که روان کاوی عبارت است از: (1) سیستمی تحقیقاتی در باب فرایندهای نفسانی که به سختی از طرق دیگری جز روان کاوی قابل دسترسی هستند;
(2) روش درمان اختلالات نوروتیک براساس چنین سیستمی;

(2) Catharis (3) Josef Breuer

(1)Tiefenpsychologie (Psychologie des profondeurs)

U.S. carried out 333 drone strikes

 in Afghanistan this year alone

Breaking News and Commentary from Citizens for Legitimate Government
23 Dec 2012
All links are here:
U.S. carried out 333 drone strikes in Afghanistan this year alone - more than the entire drone strikes in Pakistan over the past eight years COMBINED --U.S. carried out 333 drone strikes in Afghanistan in 2012, report says, up from 294 in 2011 20 Dec 2012 The United States carried out more drone strikes in Afghanistan this year than it has done in all the years put together in Pakistan since it launched the covert air war there eight years ago, it has been revealed. The statistics, published by the U.S. Air Force and published by Wired's Danger Room blog, show that there were 333 drone strikes in Afghanistan in 2012 alone, up from 294 in the previous year and 278 in 2010. It is far more than an estimated 338 strikes carried out by the CIA in Pakistan since it began hunting down remnants of al Qaeda [al-CIAduh], the Taliban and other militant groups in the Federally Administered Tribal Areas eight years ago.
British Court Rejects Drone Lawsuit 22 Dec 2012 On Friday, a British court rejected a closely watched civil suit by the son of man killed in a 2011 drone strike in Pakistan that requests a judicial declaration that British intelligence officials may be liable for assisting acts of murder, war crimes, and crimes against humanity if they share targeting intelligence with the US government. The plaintiff, Noor Khan, who was represented by the British human rights group Reprieve, had also asked the court to direct the British Foreign Secretary to issue a policy "identifying the circumstances in which intelligence may lawfully be passed on if it relates to the location of individuals who may be targeted in a drone strike." The British judges hearing the case recognized that they were essentially being asked to pass judgment on the legality of the US drone program (and of Obama Administration drone policies), and they declined the invitation to do so.
South Africa's ruling party endorses anti-Israel boycott 23 Dec 2012 In support of the oppressed Palestinians in the occupied lands, South Africa's ruling party, the African National Congress (ANC), has officially endorsed a boycott campaign against Israel. ANC issued a statement on December 20 saying that the majority of its members have voted for boycotting products from illegal Israeli settlements built on occupied lands, in a bid to end the complicity of South African people in the violation of Palestinian rights.
Anti-Nato protest marches in fear of turning 'Turkey into a battlefield' 20 Dec 2012 The deployment of Nato troops and anti-missile systems that began in Turkey this week has heightened concerns from Turkish citizens that the Syrian civil war will spill across their border. Nearly 40 German soldiers arrived in Kahramanmaras, a city about 120km from the Syrian border, to prepare the deployment of about 400 German troops, due to arrive in the coming weeks with two batteries of Patriot missiles. The United States and the Netherlands are expected to send similar numbers of soldiers and Patriot missiles to Turkey. Turkish news reports said this week the number could rise to nearly 2,000 foreign soldiers over the course of the next months.

Iran to unveil indigenous amphibious aircraft in May 2013 23 Dec 2012 ,A senior Iranian research official says Iran will fly its first indigenous amphibious aircraft in May 2013. He added that over USD2 million has been allocated to the development of the plane. Presidential Office's Deputy Manager for Technology and Innovation Mojtaba Khayyam-Nekouei said on Sunday that the six-seat plane can take off and land on both land and water. Amphibious aircraft are heavier and slower as well as being more expensive to purchase and operate than ordinary planes.

The so-called Revolutionary Military Council in Aleppo issued a statement banning women from driving. The group also released several video clips showing men of various Arab nationalities patrolling the streets and forcing people to pray.
Obama nominates John Kerry as next secretary of state 21 Dec 2012 President Barack Obama on Friday nominated John Kerry to replace Hillary Clinton as secretary of state, calling the veteran U.S. senator the "perfect choice" for America's top diplomat as he began reshaping his national security team for a second term. Obama settled on Kerry, chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and the 2004 Democratic presidential candidate, after the front-runner, U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice, withdrew from consideration last week. Kerry's departure from the Senate forces Democrats to defend his seat (MA), where the party has only a slim majority.
Polar Bears Have Friend in John Kerry 21 Dec 2012 Today, President Obama nominated Senator John Kerry (D-Mass.) to be Secretary of State. Senator Kerry has a long and distinguished record of protecting our environment, no place more consistently or forcefully then when it comes to safeguarding polar bears. Senator Kerry was an early and a vocal supporter of the decision to list polar bears under the U.S. Endangered Species Act. Before then, he fought a long battle to close a loophole in the Marine Mammal Protection Act that allowed polar bears taken in trophy hunts to be imported into the United States. Senator Kerry's support of polar bear conservation is important because the United States, with the backing of Russia, has proposed an international ban on the commercial sale of polar bear parts.
Feds raid gun store that sold weapon to shooter's mother after security cameras capture man stealing deadly rifle - just four days before massacre --ATF swoop on the store --Footage of Jordan Marsh removing the 50 calibre long gun --The AR15 was recovered in a duffel bag at the Hartford Hilton --Management at the store didn't know 11 guns were missing 21 Dec 2012 The East Windsor gun store which sourced at least one of the guns used in the Sandy Hook elementary school shooting was raided by federal firearms agents last night. Officers from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) swooped on Riverside Gun Sales at 5pm yesterday evening, as officers from East Police Department cordoned off the plaza. The raid was a result of security worries at the store after it was revealed the premises had been robbed of a rifle similar to the one used in the Newtown shooting, just four days before the tragedy. A news website showed video footage of 26 year old Jordan Marsh removing the 50 calibre long gun from the store.
NRA's LaPierre Rejects Gun Laws Following School Killings 23 Dec 2012 The National Rifle Association continues to oppose any new gun regulations in the wake of the mass shooting of elementary school students in Connecticut, the gun lobby's chief executive officer said. Wayne LaPierre said on NBC's "Meet the Press" today that the right way to improve student safety would be to place armed guards in every U.S. school, focus on prosecuting violent criminals and get mentally ill people off the street. "This town wants to argue about gun control," LaPierre said. "We don't think it works and we're not going to support it." NRA chief calls for 'a TSA in every school' --NRA calls for armed police officer in every school 21 Dec 2012 The nation's largest gun-rights lobby called Friday for armed police officers to be posted in every American school to stop the next killer "waiting in the wings." The National Rifle Association broke its silence on last week's shooting rampage at a Connecticut elementary school that left 26 children and staff dead. "The only thing that stops a bad guy with a gun is a good guy with a gun," the group's top lobbyist, Wayne LaPierre, said at a Washington news conference. LaPierre announced that former Rep. Asa Hutchison, R-Ark., will lead an NRA program that will develop a model security plan for schools that relies on armed volunteers
Homeland Security Drill Held in Kernersville, NC 21 Dec 2012 Union Cross Road near the I-40 interchange in Forsyth County was closed Friday from 8:30 am to 1:30 pm for a homeland security exercise. Event organizers said exercises like these help them stay on top of their game and get better at their jobs as first responders. People in the area of the drill probably heard and saw ambulances, fire trucks, law enforcement and military vehicles for about five hours.
Three Men Appear in Court in Mysterious Terror Case 22 Dec 2012 Three men appeared in Federal District Court in Brooklyn on Friday on charges that they had trained to be suicide bombers with a Somali terrorist group. The defendants, Ali Yasin Ahmed, 27, Mahdi Hashi, 23, and Mohamed Yusuf, 29, were arrested in August by authorities in Africa while going to Yemen. Much of the case is shrouded in mystery. For four months, the case remained under seal, and the court documents unsealed on Friday contained little elaboration on the crimes or any indication of why the case was brought in New York.
Muslim businessman sues Homeland Security, says he's harassed while traveling 22 Dec 2012 A Central Florida Muslim businessman detained by authorities at airports and border crossings more than 30 times since June has filed suit against the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. It's the second such lawsuit Sadique M. Jaffer has filed in Orlando against the federal agency in almost four years, in response to what he says are baseless and harassing detentions. Jaffer, who lives in Windermere and works in real estate and computer sales in multiple states, claims he has been detained more than 50 times since 2007 as he has traveled domestically and internationally.
Alleged Minot AFB threat-caller arrested 22 Dec 2012 Schools at Minot AFB were put on lock-down after a woman called into the Head Start preschool there threatening to kill all the children Thursday morning. The lock-downs were lifted by 12:30 p.m. after police had determined the threat was unfounded. Tiffany Shanice Anderson, 23, of Lompoc, Calif., was arrested at her home Thursday evening at 10 p.m. without incident. She was charged with making threats and providing false information on events that would lead to death or injury to people and destruction of property.
Hacker nabs 3m Verizon customer records 22 Dec 2012 A hacker has acquired more than 3 million Verizon customer records -- but leaks only 10 percent of them, after the phone and broadband giant fails to fix a security flaw. The hacker, going by the name @TibitXimer on Twitter, told ZDNet earlier this evening that the hack was carried out earlier this year on July 12, which allowed him to gain root access to the server holding the customer data. The hacker said in a later tweet the data likely belongs to Verizon FiOS fiber customers, rather than Verizon Wireless cellular customers.
Millions Face a Hit if Fix for Minimum Tax Fails to Pass --Tax will hit almost 30 million additional households 21 Dec 2012 Buried within the mass of tax and spending provisions known as the fiscal cliff is a problem that could cause grief for taxpayers and the Internal Revenue Service. It is the alternative minimum tax, a provision adopted in the 1960s to make sure the very wealthiest didn't avoid taxes by accumulating too many deductions and credits. It wasn't indexed for inflation, and Congress has repeatedly passed an annual exemption to protect middle-class families from the tax. Congress hasn't passed that extension for this year. And with talks over avoiding the fiscal cliff stalled, it may not pass one.
Former President George H.W. Bush remains hospitalized 23 Dec 2012 Former President George H.W. Bush, who has been hospitalized for a month undergoing treatment for bronchitis, may not be released from a Houston hospital in time to celebrate Christmas at home as doctors had hoped. Bush, 88, remained in stable condition and doctors were optimistic he would make a full recovery, George Kovacik, a spokesman at Methodist Hospital, said in an emailed statement on Sunday. But doctors were being "extra cautious" with his care and no discharge date had been set, the statement said. Earlier this month, Kovacik said doctors expected Bush would be able to spend Christmas at home with his family.

Rape in the World’s Largest "Democracy"
EDITORIAL http://www.nytimes.com/2012/12/29/opinion/rape-in-india.html
The brutal gang rape of a young woman in New Delhi this month has cast a cold light on how badly India treats its women.India must work on changing a culture in which women are routinely devalued... a rising economic power and the world’s largest democracy, India can never reach its full potential if half its population lives in fear of unspeakable violence.

Mayor: Keep NY Subway Push Deaths In Perspective www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=168186064
..."It's a very tragic case, but what we want to focus on today is the overall safety in New York," Bloomberg told reporters following a police academy graduation. The news of the horrific death of a 46-year-old man from India came as Mayor Michael Bloomberg touted drops in the city’s annual homicide and shooting totals and urged residents to keep the second fatal subway shove in the city this month in perspective...asked about the episode, Bloomberg... pointed to legal and policy changes that led to the release of many mentally ill people from psychiatric institutions from the 1960s through 1990s

#1 white male supremacist state of terror uses tragedy as political leverage with its 'largest democracy' client state

The young Indian victim of a brutal gang rape has died in Singapore, where she had been taken for treatment. The biggest protests were in the capital, where the crime took place. Thousands came out into the streets in cities like Mumbai, Bangalore and New Delhi to mourn her death, demand justice for her and safety for women. But the protests were quieter than those last week which had turned violent despite tight security to prevent mass demonstrations....the incident has sparked widespread calls for social change.India's government has been criticized for being slow to understand the outrage that followed the incident, in a country where crimes against women are growing, and where police figures show that rape is among the fastest growing crimes, even though many rapes go unreported.

US Erases Women’s Rights in Iraq10/7/09 By Ghali Hassan http://www.globalresearch.ca/index.php?context=viewArticle&code=HAS20051007&articleId=1054
Prior to the arrival of U.S. forces, Iraqi women were free to go wherever they wish and wear whatever they like. The 1970 Iraqi constitution, gave Iraqi women equity and liberty unmatched in the Muslim World. Since March 2003, Iraqi women have been brutally attacked, kidnapped and intimidated from participating in Iraqi society. The generation-old equality and liberty laws have been, replaced by Middle Ages laws that strip women of their rights and put them in the same oppressive life as women in Afghanistan which the U.S. invaded to “liberate” its women. The 1970 Iraqi constitution is not only the most progressive constitution in the Muslim World, but also the most equal. Iraqis were mentioned only as “citizens”, and Iraqi women’s rights were specifically protected. In December 2003, the U.S.-appointed Iraqi Governing Council (IGC) – constituted mostly of the current puppet government – approved resolution 137, which will replace Iraq’s 1959 Personal Status Laws with religious law to be administered by conservative religious clerics. .Since the U.S. invasion, Iraqi women’s rights have fallen to the lowest level in Iraq’s history. Under the new U.S.-crafted constitution women will be oppressed and the role of women in Iraqi society will be curtailed and relegated to the caring for “children and the elderly”. The aim was the complete destruction of nationalist movements replacing them with expatriate religious fanatics and criminals as the U.S liquidated Iraqi opposition or dissent to the Occupation. The creation of paramilitary death squads – from the SCIRI and Al- Da’wa militias – tied to the current puppet government and Iran have been terrorising Iraq’s secular communities and assassinating large number of prominent Iraqi politicians and professionals (see Robert Dreyfuss - Death Squads and Diplomacy)....What ever Americans think of their nation and the crimes their government commits against innocent people, “for the people of Iraq and the rest of the world, the torture and abuses will serve as a reminder of America’s unyielding sadism against those living under its occupation. The [Occupation] proves that the content of the word[s] ‘freedom’ [and “liberty”] that American politicians and propagandists want to impose on the rest of the world are violent domination, racism, torture, sexual humiliation... proves that freedom and liberty were not what the United States was founded upon.” wrote Dr. Joseph Massad of N.Y. Columbia University

US Military sexual abuse 'staggering', part 2
http://english.aljazeera.net/indepth/2010/12/20101223113859171112.html
Kira Mountjoy-Pepka of Pack Parachute, a non-profit organisation that assists sexually abused veterans, explains ".. what we’ve seen for decades is that when someone is assaulted, the military investigators create false or misleading crime reports. Then the case is dismissed, and the command persecutes the victim for false reporting."

Timeline
1995: Archives of Family Medicine revealed that 90 per cent of women veterans from the 1991 US attack on Iraq and from earlier wars had been sexually harassed.

2003: American Journal of Industrial Medicine surveyed women veterans from Vietnam to the 1991 Iraq attack and found that 30 percent of them had been raped.

2004: According to a Journal of Military Medicine study, of veterans from Vietnam and all wars since, 71 per cent of women soldiers sexually assaulted or raped
while serving.

2007: The Miles Foundation, a private nonprofit organisation that provides support to victims of sexual assault in the military, received 976 reports of sexual assault in the Central Command Area of Responsibility, which includes Iraq and Afghanistan.Christine Hansen, executive director of the foundation, said at the time that there was a steady upward trend in the number of reported cases of sexual assault, of 10 to 15 per cent each quarter.

2008: The Pentagon reported nearly 3,000 cases of women assaulted sexually in 2008, up 9
percent from 2007. For women serving in Iraq and Afghanistan, the increase was 25 percent.
2009: Annual report “ FY 09, a total of 3,230 reports of sexual assault involving military service members representing an 11% increase from FY 08.”

2009: Pentagon admission that approximately 80 per cent of rapes are never reported -the most under-documented crime in the military. cites the Feres Doctrine (Feres v. United States, 340 US 135 [1950]) that made it impossible for the survivor to sue the investigators "essentially prohibits people from suing the military and/or petitioning non-military legal authority for interdiction without the military’s prior and explicit agreement and consent." The military always has their own investigators investigate.... goes to great lengths to protect the perpetrators, and that deters survivors from reporting.

ery six seconds a woman in the United States is raped (U.S. Department of Justice, 1999)

The arrest rate last year was just 25 percent - a fraction of the rate for murder - 79 percent, and aggravated assault - 51 percent.
A five month CBS News Investigation found a staggering number of rape kits -- that could contain incriminating DNA evidence -- have never been sent to crime labs for testing. At least 20,000 untested kits
<http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2009/11/09/cbsnews_investigates/main5590842.shtml>...Many untested for years. And...At least twelve major American cities: Anchorage, Baltimore, Birmingham, Chicago, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Columbus, Indianapolis, Jacksonville, Oakland, Phoenix, San Diego have no idea how many rape kits in storage are untested.

THE USE (AND MIS USE) OF DATA ON RAPE: A White Paper Prepared for the CounterQuo Conference October 17-19, 2008
Revised September 2011

This White Paper’s thesis is that rape prevalence denial is a calculated strategy aimed at silencing rape victims and preventing successful rape prosecutions. Anti-rape activists need to better understand the agendas that propel this campaign, be more aware of the effort’s aims, and take more effective steps to combat this deliberate campaign of misinformation.

Nearly 1 in 5 women in the U.S. has been sexually assaulted

According to this phone survey, 1.3 million American women experienced rape or attempted rape last year.. significantly higher annual figure than previous studies found; RAINN’s estimate was 272,350 for 2010...however with only 84,767 rapes reported last year it's clear we’re only seeing the tip of the iceberg...According to this survey, 1.3 million American women experienced a rape or attempted rape last year. That’s actually a significantly higher annual figure than previous studies found; RAINN’s estimate was 272,350 for 2010. But regardless, with only 84,767 rapes reported last year, it’s clear that we’re only seeing the tip of the iceberg when it comes sexual assault.

Imagine if a disease suddenly appeared in the United States and this disease affected 20% to 30% of women during their lifetimes... that exposure to this disease led to mental health problems like depression and anxiety disorders... also led to health problems such as reproductive health problems, sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV, and even things like heart disease, heart attack, and stroke. Also imagine the disease was, in a sense, infectious, children exposed to it also would grow up to engage in this disease and, in a sense, replicate it..... the truth is that this disease exists today, and it's violence against women and girls....it's been with us year after year for time immemorial.

US estimate is about 4.8 million women experience assaults or rapes by an intimate partner each year....and almost 2,400 women were killed by their partners in 2007.

Sexual Violence, Stalking, and Intimate Partner Violence Widespread in the US New survey finds these types of violence affect the health of millions of adults
On average, 24 people per minute are victims of rape, physical violence, or stalking by an intimate partner in the United States, according to findings released today by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Over the course of a year, that equals more than 12 million women and men. Those numbers only tell part of the story – more than 1 million women reported being raped in a year and over 6 million women and men were victims of stalking in a year, the report says.
Key findings in the NISVS 2010 Summary Report include:For women:

  • High rates of sexual violence, stalking, and intimate partner violence were reported by women.
    • Nearly 1 in 5 women has been raped at some time in her life.
    • One in 4 women has been a victim of severe physical violence by an intimate partner in her lifetime.
    • One in 6 women has experienced stalking victimization during her lifetime in which she felt very fearful or believed that she or someone close to her would be harmed or killed. Much of stalking victimization was facilitated by technology, such as unwanted phone calls and text messages.
  • Almost 70 percent of female victims experienced some form of intimate partner violence for the first time before the age of 25.
  • Approximately 80 percent of female victims of rape were first raped before age 25.
  • Female victims of violence (sexual violence, stalking, intimate partner violence) were significantly more likely to report physical and mental health problems than female non–victims.
  • Across all forms of violence (sexual violence, stalking, intimate partner violence), the vast majority of victims knew their perpetrator (often an intimate partner or acquaintance and seldom a stranger).
