Want to save the planet? Move to Wales. Wales is letting people build their own eco homes in the countryside

Well done to all these homeowners. It's fascinating what they're doing.
However, only 32 households have signed up, and the population of Wales is 3 million – that's simply not good enough. The government needs a scheme with fewer rules, that attracts hundreds of households, not just dozens.

And what's all this about living off the land? What about doctors, nurses, school teachers, policemen and all the other non-farmers who have an essential role in the community? They're not allowed on the scheme because unless you're a small farmer you're buggered.
The government hasn't thought this through at all – not the rural economics, nor the climate science – but that takes nothing away from the people who have actually succeeded in building their sustainable homes.

Good initiative by Wales. Hats off to them. I hope this will come into effect everywhere as soon as possible.

In Pembrokeshire, Wales, the cutest, handmade houses have been popping up around the county. These were homes, made of natural, locally sourced materials and scavenged bits from the surrounding countryside, embody low-impact living. What exactly does that mean? It means that the inhabitants who built these houses, like Simon and Jasmine Dale, grow and cultivate the vast majority of what they consume. The two have been living in their very own hobbit-sized house since 2003. And now, they're helping others build similar homes in the Lamma community—the country's first eco-village. Needless to say, the Bagginses would approve.
