Thirty years before Hitler came to power in Germany, and about forty years before Raphael Lemkin authored the word genocide, Imperial Germany conducted the 1st genocide in a dark and terrible century. Lemkin himself did not consider this event to be a "genocide" because he believed that the destruction of the Herero & Nama peoples could not be attributed to German colonial policy but to a curious phenomenon known in the circles of Western racial theorists as "race suicide."
