New york City(Manhatan) today 30th of Oct 2012~After  "Sandy"made a mess out of everything!!
" No power, no phone, no wifi, no cooking fuel, no hot water on Lower East Side, but lots of good cheer, street life, and ingenuity. And small-scale capitalism: somehow LES pizza places are making & selling hot slices; corner stores are selling some sort of cowboy-coffee by candlelight; and liquor stores are doing good biz. Lots of garbage, leaves, & branches in the street; big trees in community gardens seem to have been felled sadly. The odd awning was ripped down, and lots of bikes locked to posts are now twisted messes. Best sight this morning: two BMWs smashed into each other in their mutual Avenue C flood ride last night. Kevin Caplicki's Sandy as class warrior seemed spot-on for those vehicles! Also discovered that it's true: stores give away free ice cream when there's a major blackout; I got fancy mango & lemon ice! And Manhattan looks super surreal sans lights. Oddly, everyone is ridiculously orderly, such as when crossing streets - cars...& pedestrians kindly taking turns. And no looting so far, even in the 2 stores I saw with wide-open broken windows. The 2 facts are even more surreal than no lights. Ok, so probably no more posts from me today. Phone battery low & no way to recharge. Back to some more candlelight reading this evening! Little sense of what's happening in rest of world beyond the Lower East Side, except I did just walk across Williamsburg Bridge (with FDR flooded below) to "civilization" (well, at least coffee), going against the tide of hipsters coming to the LES to check out the damage, and got good news from friends I ran into & email: Interference Archive survived the toxic Gowanus Canal flooding (a friend of a friend's recording studio wasn't so lucky). Wish I could pitch in to help somewhere today; thinking of those folks who were already struggling who lost out again in the hurricane."
