Privatizing prisons turns prisoners into commodities and incentivizes private corporations to lobby against decriminalization of minor victimless crimes, for longer and mandatory minimum sentencing and increased incarceration of the population. In some instances, the corporations go directly to the judges and literally buy more prisoners as the two recent "kids for cash" scandals show. They also sign contracts with the states that requires keeping the prisons full, such as at 90%, which pressures state and local authorities to send more people to jail for a variety of offenses and deny parol requests. Privatization of prisons and hence the criminal justice system was known for long to be one of the last symptoms of the cancer called capitalism. It's happened and the patient is dying.
