The so-called "U.S.-Dakota War of 1862” was not a war. It was a massacre of the Dakota Indians. After seeing so many massacres of their people and stealing their lands by white settlers, and after so many broken peace treaties that had promised food in exchange for confiscated land, the starving Natives rebelled and during the rebellion killed some 350 white settlers who had pushed them off their lands and whose attitude was "if they're hungry, let them eat grass", which was... a far cry from how Indians had treated the white settlers when they were hungry for which their descendants shamelessly celebrate "Thanksgiving". In response to the rebellion, the US government hanged 38 men in a public square and put hundreds more in prison for life. The US government still has the same attitude towards what's left of the American Indians whose neighborhoods are dumping grounds for hazardous and radioactive waste and who live in abject poverty.
