امپریالیسم یعنی قدرت نمائی توسط حاکمیت سیاسی در فراسوی صلاحیت ارضی اش ،چه از طریق ابزارهای اقتصادی و چه نظامی، قدرت سخت یا نرم، و یا لذا برخی ترکیبی .این ممکن است شکل اشغال مستقیم همراه با برخی از درجاتی از کنترل اداری بخود بگیرد، اگرچه پایگاه های استراتژیک یا امتیازاتی ارزان تر، آسان تر، و خواهان مسئولیت کمتری برای ساکنان میباشد. استعمار، که در اصل حاکی از استقرار(ماندگاه) در بستر گسترده شدن درونبوم بود، به تازگی مفهوم هژمونی از طریق صادرات فرهنگی را بخود گرفته ."
